The thing slowly pulls itself out of the cocoon.

Bits of pink tissue dangle from its sagging flesh. The creature, naked, thin, and hideous, crawls across the floor.

A slug trail follows in its wake.

“Dylan,” it says again.

It’s my mom.

I’m absolutely sure of it.

Using her slimy elbows, the mom-thing pulls her horrid body closer to me. I take several steps away in retreat.

“Dylan!” she screams.

It’s inhuman.

Impossible.

Slowly, the creature that resembles my mother rises to her grotesque feet. Outstretched arms reach out for me.

“Dylan!” she cries again.

Gore dribbles from her bottom lip.

I’m flushed with fear.

Utter terror.

“Mom?” I finally manage to ask. “Is that you?”

“Dylan!” she croak-screams.

The mom-thing suddenly lurches forward, locking her arms around my neck. Her horrible face is inches from mine.

“Dylan, help me,” she pleads.

I should feel compassion. I should want to embrace this monstrosity. But I can’t.

Instead, I toss her to the floor.

She lands on the concrete with a wet smack. Chunks of flesh pop from her body like soggy popcorn.

“Dylan?” she asks, wounded.

And begins her trek across the floor once again.

My brain reels in horror.

I can’t handle this.

Won’t handle this.

I turn toward the door.

And run for my life.
